DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – Lawyers for an auto mechanic in Dallas are taking their arguments to City Hall on Wednesday afternoon.
Rezoning on Ross Avenue would force Hinga Mbogo to close his shop. The Institute for Justice is now taking up his case.
“The city would make it impossible for him to earn a living,” said Garrett Atherton, the Institute for Justice’s Outreach Coordinator. “What he would probably have to do is tear down his auto garage, build a coffee stand and somehow learn to be a barista. That’s just not going to happen for a life-long mechanic.”
More than 60,000 people have signed a petition to allow the shop to stay.
“We’re hoping to avoid going to court. We want to work with council and the City of Dallas. There is widespread support for [Mbogo] and the people’s elected representative should transmit that support into passing an ordinance that gives him more time to stay in his property until he retires,” said Atherton.
