WASHINGTON, D.C. (WBAP/KLIF News) – President Obama will honor a Garland Police officer who took down two gunmen outside an anti-Muslim event in 2015.
Officer Gregory Stevens will receive the Medal of Valor during a ceremony at the White House at 10:00 a.m. Monday.
He was working off-duty security on May 3, 2015 at a Prophet Muhammad cartoon contest at the Culwell Center on Naaman Forest Boulevard in Garland when two terrorist tried to attack.
During the trial for a third man charged with plotting the attack, Officer Stevens recalled seeing one of the men get out of their vehicle with a semiautomatic rifle. Officer Stevens said he immediately drew his pistol and started shooting. He said he fired off 14 rounds. SWAT officers responded and helped finish the job.
The Medal of Valor is the highest national honor awarded to public safety officers.
