WACO, Texas (AP) – The parents of a 12-year-old black Texas girl who suffered severe rope burn around her neck during an overnight field trip have filed a lawsuit against the private Waco school she attends.
The Dallas Morning News reports the lawsuit seeking $3 million in damages was filed Monday in Travis County against Live Oak Classical School and the owner of the ranch where the incident occurred.
Authorities are investigating how the girl was injured.
The school has previously said the girl was accidentally hurt when students were playing with a rope swing attached to a tree. The school’s attorney, David Deaconson, says the girl’s injuries weren’t the result of bullying, as the girl and her mother have suggested.
