DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) Dallas is starting its Juneteenth celebrations this afternoon. Food trucks will be at “Picnic on the Plaza” outside Dallas City Hall from 1130a until 1 pm today. The holiday commemorates June 19th, 1865, the day slaves learned the federal government had abolished slavery two years before. Tomorrow, there is a festival at the West Dallas Multipurpose Center. Saturday, a celebration at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center will feature free family activities from noon – 5. Juneteenth falls on Sunday this year – also Fathers day, so a two-in-one celebration is happening at Gilley’s. Men will be cooking up food to serve their families and the community. Celebrity chefs this year include Dallas Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Erik Wilson and the mayors of Arlington, Lancaster and Plano.
