DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF NEWS) – A flesh-eating bacteria has infected a Buda, Texas, man who traveled to Port Aransas with his family to enjoy the Father’s Day weekend.
According to the Dallas Morning News, Adrian Ruiz later told his wife he had a headache and was developing a rash on his leg. When it got worse he went to a doctor who diagnosed his condition as Vibrio vulnificus, a bacteria found in warm water that enters the blood stream through an open cut or wound. It is sometimes also present in under cooked shellfish.
Ruiz’s wife, Lashelle, told KXAN in Austin, “This is a very aggressive bacteria and within a few hours after being in the water he was sick and is now battling this horrible bacteria which has caused a nasty, huge open sore wound on his right leg,” She said she was afraid he would lose his leg.
Though the bacteria is relatively rare Ruiz was the 27th victim in Texas this year. A Harris County man, Brian Parrott, had his right leg amputated last week after being stricken by the bacteria after swimming at a beach in Galveston.
Ruiz’s condition is gradually improving and he is expected to make a full recovery.
