Garland (WBAP/KLIF News) – A military group has given its award for bravery to the Garland police officer who stopped two people trying to attack an event at a community center last year.
Two people pulled up to an event at Curtis Culwell Center on May 3, 2015. Police say they fired at Officer Greg Stevens and Garland ISD officer Bruce Joiner.
Joiner was shot in the leg but was released from the hospital the same night. Stevens returned fire, hitting the two gunmen. Both gunmen were killed without hitting anyone else.
“He could have retreated and sought cover,” Military Order of the World Wars writes in a statement about why Stevens was chosen. Instead, the group says Stevens fired at terrorists who were carrying more than a thousand rounds of ammunition “without waiting for reinforcements.”
“There are many, many, many brave men and women, had the moment chosen them instead of choosing me would have done exactly what I did,” Stevens says.
President Obama also presented Stevens the Medal of Valor in May.
“Sometimes it’s a little overwhelming,” Stevens says. “Men and women in law enforcement do extraordinary things every single day. Being recognized for it is not something most men and women in law enforcement are looking for.”
