AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF) – Texas is reporting the first local case of the Zika virus likely transmitted by a mosquito in the state.
The case is in Cameron County which is the farthest county to the south on the border with Mexico.
The patient is not pregnant and had not recently traveled to countries considered to be Zika hot spots.
Texas Department of State Health Services Commissioner Dr. John Hellerstedt does not believe the virus will become widespread in Texas.
“We knew it was only a matter of time before we saw a Zika case spread by a mosquito in Texas,” said Dr. Hellerstedt.
Cameron County, DSHS and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are working to respond to the case.
