MELISSA (WBAP/KLIF News) – When Melissa fifth grader Bishop Curry Junior heard about the hot-car death of an infant who lived in his neighborhood last summer, he knew he wanted to do something about it.
Curry Jr. said that’s when he started jotting down ideas for a device that could prevent them. His invention is called the Oasis.
It’s a car seat that blows cold air on a baby that has been left in a hot car and would simultaneously alert the authorities. Curry said he has high hopes for his invention.
“I really hope it gets manufactured and it will save lots of lives. Because summer is coming up in a couple of months and that’s when it will be most needed,” he said.
His father, Bishop Curry Senior, said he was moved when his son told him about his idea.
“It almost brought me to tears literally. You hear this happen all the time. He was courageous enough to say you know what this has to stop. Enough of the news reports, enough of feeling bad. He actually did something about it,” said Curry Senior.
Curry Sr., who works for Toyota, told the company about his son’s device. The company sent Curry Junior and his father to the Center for Child Injury Prevention Conference in Michigan, where the 10-year-old inventor presented his idea to car seat manufacturers.
Curry Sr. said when they got back from the conference, word spread about his son’s invention and the community stepped in to help.
There’s currently a GoFundMe campaign to help pay for Curry’s legal and manufacturing fees that has already raised more than $15,000.00.
